National Lottery Donates £10,000

With the DofE season now well under way the current cohort of students have been exceptionally busy preparing for the largest area of their award – Expedition. With the assistance of the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund, Phoenix have access to top of the range equipment to ensure they have everything they need in order to complete the gruelling 30K over 2 days.

This year the cohort will be decending upon Much Wenlock, Shropshire for their practice weekend (29th-30th March) followed by Church Stretton for the assessment (4th-5th May). In recent weeks students have been put through their paces in first aid, the countryside code, cooking on trangias, tent erecting, map reading and route planning amongst other areas.

DofE participants meet every Wednesday in the LRC at 3:15pm. Anyone from 14years+ can participate in DofE and work towards achieving initially their Bronze Award, moving on to the Silver upon successful completion.

The DofE programme helps to develop leadership, teamwork, self-motivation, communication, confidence, consideration and the ability to learn.

From a sample 76% of major UK organisations emphasised how important it is for schools to enable ‘life skills’ to be developed, with 64% of the sample indicating that DofE might make a positive difference in selecting an applicant for interview.
It is hoped that the Silver Award will be launched in 2015. Applications for the 2014/15 DofE cohort will be open from 30th April 2014; for more information please see Miss Hancocks (DofE Coordinator).
